a poetic reinterpretation

based on Psalm 124 | Revised Common Lectionary for Proper 16 (21) Year A | Sunday, August 23, 2020
I don’t see how we would have
come through it–
I need to keep saying it or
I’ll forget–
I don’t see how we would have
come through it
without you.
When our world fell apart
around us
and when I say around us
I mean within us, too.
(O God, it’s happening again.)
It’s a life ripped away,
it’s a broken heart,
it’s vicious addiction–
death in perverse
masquerade of life
without you.
Without you
we would have drown.
I need to keep saying it or
I’ll forget:
You are the breath in
our bodies that
keeps us afloat
within you.
I don’t see how
without you.
