Psalm 133

a poetic reinterpretation

based on Psalm 133 | Revised Common Lectionary for Proper 15 (20) Year A | for Sunday, August 16, 2020

old man and woman standing surrounded by yellow flowers

There is an ease that falls
upon us when at long last
we can simply be ourselves
with one another,
no longer concerned with
pretense or posture or
proving our worth.
The space between us
shimmers with the sacred–
not sacred like stuffed-shirt formality,
but holy like laughter,
holy like weeping together,
holy like sitting in silence,
no need to cram
words between us.
I can see now,
after all these years,
this sacred space is
God between us.
